Back by Popular Demand - Healthcare Fraud Prevention
This event will be the only Union Seniors program offered in March. We will meet at Central United Methodist Church, 901 South Hayne Street, Monroe, on March 9 at 10 AM. Stephanie Bias, with the North Carolina Senior Medicare Patrol, will talk about protecting our Medicare benefits from identity theft and will teach us how to detect Medicare scams and how to understand Medicare statements. There will be plenty of comfortable seats and the sound system will make it possible to hear clearly. Come with your questions.
Tax Time - Income Tax Preparation Assistance

Homestead Tax Exemption for Seniors aged 65 or Older
As an individual or couple, if your annual income is $27,100 or less, you may qualify to receive 50% off your house (up to $100,000) and one acre of land in taxes. If your only income is Social Security, the only proof you will need is your SSA 1099. You can receive this exemption between January 1 and June 1, 2010. No cost Diabetes Self Management Education Program
The Union County Health Department is pleased to offer a diabetes self management education program for anyone who has been diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. The purpose of this program is to help people better manage their diabetes in order to prevent complications from developing later in life. Our diabetes program includes an initial one-on-one visit, 8 hours of classroom time, and a follow up visit to check your progress. Classes are taught in a small group format and family members are welcome to attend. Classroom topics include an overview of diabetes, living with diabetes, diabetes and healthy eating, monitoring and controlling your blood glucose, medications and preventing complications.
